Fishing and Boat Excursions
We are indeed fortunate to have such a diverse range of species available to us. Some 30+ species are to be had from literally minutes of the MullaghmoreHarbour to 30 miles out. Cod, Ling, Pollock, Wrasse, Pouting, Conger, Coalfish are the main varieties. On the sand bottom all species of flatfish are to be found, alongside the large Skate which give excellent sport. In the more tidal areas Tope, Spurdog, Bullhuss give a terrific fight on the right tackle.
If access was easier to arrange, a visit to Inishmurray Island would be a must. Only 6km separates Inishmurray from the mainland, but there is no regular boat service and the lack of a harbour on the island makes landing subject to weather conditions. Excursions can be arranged for 25 – 30 euros with Lomax Boats, Keith Clarke, Joe McGowan or Peter Power in July and August. Trips can also be arranged throughout the spring and autumn, but it is advised to organise a group together as the hire of the boat can cost up to 300 euro.
